Mobile App Development Cost in Kenya: Android and iOS
What shapes the budget for a mobile app in Kenya: one codebase or two, the backend and admin panel behind it, payments, maps, chat, store accounts, testing and ongoing updates.
A mobile app is rarely just a mobile app. Most of the cost sits in the backend, the admin dashboard and the testing that make the screens useful in real conditions.
One Codebase Or Two
Building separate native apps for Android and iOS roughly doubles the effort. A cross-platform approach such as React Native lets one codebase serve both, which usually reduces cost and keeps the two apps consistent. Native work still makes sense for a few cases, such as heavy graphics or deep hardware features, but most business apps do not need it.
Whichever route you choose, the app also needs a backend to store data, handle logins and send notifications, and an admin dashboard so your team can manage users and content. These parts are often missing from early quotes, so ask whether they are included.
Features That Add Cost
User accounts, M-Pesa payments, maps and location, in-app chat or calls, push notifications, ratings and offline support each add design, build and testing time. Payments and location deserve extra care because mistakes affect money and trust.
Design is another driver. A clean template-based interface costs less than a fully custom design, and research-led user experience work costs more again. Decide how much polish version one really needs.
Store Accounts, Testing And After Launch
Publishing needs a Google Play developer account and an Apple Developer account, which have their own fees paid directly to Apple and Google. We recommend creating them in your name so you control the app. Testing on real devices and different Android versions also takes time and should be part of the plan.
After launch, phones update, libraries change and users report issues, so budget for ongoing maintenance. A small monthly plan is usually cheaper than urgent fixes when an operating system update breaks something.
